An Access Simulation |
The BSA (Boston Society of Architects) is planning to build a 600 sq. ft. 'almost accessible' and 'fully accessible' structure at its annual conference (ABX) this November. It will be a prominent element in the Exhibit Hall (on the main aisle). We will offer people (1,000's attend!) to move through this structure in a wheelchair, scooter, walker, etc. and experience some of the common issues on the 'almost accessible' part and the difference that 'fully accessible' elements can make. We hope to have the MIT Age Lab join this effort and provide its age simulation suits for people to use too. The idea is to help architects understand WHY the inches of minimum design standards matter, and why meeting/exceeing them is important for many people. We would like to have people with disabilities involved in designing and hosting this exhibit. The first design meeting is at the new BSA space (290 Congress St., Boston) on 5/10 from 11:30 - 1pm. (Yes, lunch will be provided) Please let me know if you or others from your organizations would be interested/available to participate. I hope so!
